Why is instant messaging not working on my phone?

I have asked this question before, but didn't get any helpful answers so I'm asking again :P I have the samsung impression with unlimited family messaging plan but when I go on instant messaging it says request timed out so what do I do to the settings to make it work and what's the difference between media net at&t mms and at&t ims?! So yeah. Please answer :(
