How can I put this into simpler language?
Blanch feels she needs to shelter herself from the reality of her own shortcomings and weaknesses so she wraps herself in lies. Her ego, her shame of promiscuous behavior, her slowly aging self and her alcohol problem all work against her in acknowledging what is really wrong in her life. Although Stanley manages to push past Blanchs’ protective cloak he has his own personality problems. He lives happily being a coarse, domineering macho man ruled by primal instincts. Stella in contrast seems the most in touch with reality but fails to accept the truth about her sister’s past and about Stanley’s violation of Blanche.
