Gay Marriage vs accepted Marriage (man & woman)Can gay marriage be called "Civil Unions?" & we move forward?

Since gay people want to be able to Marry and many opposers (men & women with accepted traditional marriages) want the "Marriage" word not to be changed/tainted...what ever their reasons... Can the law call a Gay Marriage a "Civil Union" and give the gay people the same rights but just have it be defined by "Civil Union?" Then gay people can still get “Married” but the true definition of a gay marriage be “Civil Union?” Would this be fine with either/both sides of the position? This way on Birth certificates of children with both partners being gay it can state “Civil Union” and then all the people who are doing any legal paperwork can have a delineation of who and what kind of marriage they are working with? There are more points that I can express in which this would solve problems. But you guys probably know more than me. (I think if the proposition in the 3 states said approve “Gay Civil Unions” then I think the propositions would have ped.) What are your thoughts?
